How to Care for Porcelain Jewelry: Keep Your Pieces Beautiful for Years

Porcelain jewelry is delicate, beautiful, and — with the right care — incredibly durable. Whether you've just received your first piece of handmade porcelain jewelry or you've been collecting for years, these simple tips will help you keep every piece looking as stunning as the day you got it.

    Why Porcelain Jewelry Is Special

Unlike mass-produced metal or plastic jewelry, handmade porcelain pieces are triple kiln-fired at temperatures up to 1200°C. This process creates a glass-smooth, highly durable surface — but like all fine jewelry, it rewards a little care and attention.

    1. Keep It Dry

Porcelain itself is water-resistant once kiln-fired, but the gold lustre finish and metal findings (hooks, bails, chains) can be affected by prolonged exposure to water. Remove your porcelain earrings and necklaces before:

    • Swimming or bathing
    • Washing dishes
    • Applying lotions, perfumes, or hairspray

A good rule of thumb: jewelry goes on last when getting ready, and comes off first when you get home.

    2. Store It Carefully

Porcelain is hard but can chip if knocked against hard surfaces. Store your pieces individually — ideally in the pouch or box they came in — to prevent them from scratching or chipping each other. A soft-lined jewelry box or a small fabric pouch works perfectly.

    3. Clean Gently

If your porcelain jewelry needs cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth to gently wipe the surface. For more stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth is fine — just dry it thoroughly afterwards. Avoid:

    • Ultrasonic cleaners
    • Harsh chemical cleaners or jewelry dips
    • Abrasive cloths or scrubbing

    4. Handle the Gold Lustre with Care

The 22K gold lustre finish on handmade porcelain jewelry is kiln-fired directly into the surface, making it far more durable than gold plating on metal. However, it can still wear over time with rough handling. Treat it gently and it will stay brilliant for years.

    5. Wear It Often

This might be the most important tip of all. Porcelain jewelry is made to be worn and enjoyed — not kept in a drawer. The more you wear it, the more it becomes part of your story. And the more people will ask you where you got it.

    A Note on Handmade Pieces

Every piece of BitaJewells porcelain jewelry is hand-painted and one of a kind. Small variations in colour, texture, and pattern are not imperfections — they are the signature of something made by human hands. That's what makes it yours.
