Creating handmade porcelain jewelry is a meticulous and rewarding journey that transforms raw clay into wearable works of art. The process involves several stages, each requiring skill, precision, and patience.
-
Design and Shaping
It all begins with inspiration—whether from nature, patterns, or minimalistic forms. I sketch ideas and carefully choose shapes that translate beautifully into jewelry. Using high-quality porcelain clay, I hand-shape each piece, paying attention to fine details. Depending on the design, I may use simple tools, cutters, or molds, but much of the work is done by hand to maintain the organic and unique quality of the pieces. -
Drying Stage
Once shaped, the porcelain pieces must air-dry completely. This is a delicate step, as any moisture left behind can cause cracks during firing. The drying process ensures the clay is ready for its first transformation in the kiln. -
First Kiln Firing (Bisque Firing)
The dried pieces undergo their first firing at 1200°C in the kiln. This stage, called “bisque firing,” hardens the clay into a durable form but leaves it porous enough for the next step. After this firing, the pieces are no longer soft but have a matte, chalky appearance. -
Sanding and Refining
After the first firing, I sand the surfaces gently to smooth out any rough edges. This step ensures that each piece feels soft and refined when worn. Careful sanding gives the porcelain its signature delicate feel. -
Glazing
Glazing is where the magic truly happens. Each piece is either hand-painted, dipped, or brushed with a carefully selected glaze. This not only adds color, shine, or patterns but also seals the porcelain, making it non-porous and strong. I use glazes in a variety of finishes—some are minimalist and translucent, while others may include soft hues or unique speckled effects. -
Second Kiln Firing (Glaze Firing)
The glazed pieces return to the kiln for a second firing at 1200°C. This transforms the glaze into a glossy or matte finish, giving the jewelry its final, polished appearance. During this stage, the heat also strengthens the porcelain further, ensuring it is durable yet lightweight. -
Third Firing (Optional - Gold Lustre and Details)
For special designs, I may apply accents such as gold lustre or decorative finishes. These fine details are painted onto the pieces and require a third firing at a lower temperature. This final step adds luxurious touches, like gold edges or intricate highlights, that make the pieces stand out as true works of art. -
Assembly and Finishing
Once all firings are complete, I carefully assemble the jewelry. High-quality components like sterling silver or gold-plated findings are added to transform the porcelain into earrings, necklaces, or rings. Each piece is inspected to ensure it meets the highest standards of craftsmanship before it’s ready to be worn and cherished.
From the initial shaping to the final firing, the process of creating handmade porcelain jewelry is slow, thoughtful, and filled with intention. Each step ensures that the finished piece is durable, lightweight, and beautifully unique, offering wearable art you’ll treasure for years to come.
